Extendable marble Tulip table: does it exist? The alternatives

Among Google's related searches for this kind of table, the same question keeps coming up: is there an extendable marble Tulip table? It is an understandable wish: the beauty of stone every day, plus a few extra seats when guests arrive. In this guide we answer the question clearly and look at the best alternatives with the Tulip table.

Is there an extendable marble Tulip table?

At Tavoli.Design the answer is no: extendable Tulip tables, both round and oval, come only with a laminate top. All our marble Tulip tables, from Carrara to Marquinia, have a fixed top.

The reason is practical. An extendable top has to open and take an extra leaf, and the mechanism works best with a light, stable material such as laminate, which also resists scratches, stains and moisture. Marble is heavy and every slab has its own unique veining: a stone leaf would hardly match the rest of the top, and the joint would remain clearly visible in the middle of the table.

If you come across an "extendable marble table", check carefully what it really is: it is often a top made of another material with a marble effect, or a table with side extensions in a different material.

Alternative 1: the extendable laminate Tulip table

This is the right choice if space is tight and guests only come over now and then. The laminate top is practical for everyday life, and the die-cast aluminium pedestal base leaves everyone's legs free, even when the table is open.

Round extendable

  • 100 cm, open 145x100 cm: 4 seats closed, about 6 open.
  • 120 cm, open 170x120 cm: 4 to 5 seats closed, 6 comfortably and up to 7-8 open.
  • 137 cm, open 187x137 cm: 6 seats closed, up to 8 open.

Oval extendable

  • 165x85 cm, open 215x85 cm: 4 to 6 seats closed, 6 to 8 open, ideal for narrow rooms.
  • 169x111 cm, open 219x111 cm: 6 seats closed, 8 open.
  • 179x111 cm, open 229x111 cm: 6 to 7 seats closed, 8 to 9 open.

You will find every size, including the in-between ones, in our guide to extendable Tulip table sizes and seating and in the extendable Tulip tables category.

Alternative 2: a slightly larger fixed marble Tulip table

If marble is a must for you, the strategy is simple: choose the size based on the largest number of people you want to host, not on everyday use. A marble table a little larger than you strictly need is not wasted space: the top is the star of the room and a few extra centimetres show it off.

  • Round marble, 137 cm: 6 comfortable seats, up to 7.
  • Round marble, 150 cm: 6 to 7 comfortable seats, up to 8.
  • Round marble, 160 cm: 7 to 8 seats.
  • Oval marble, 199x121 cm: 6 to 8 comfortable seats, up to 8.
  • Oval marble, 219x121 cm: 8 comfortable seats, up to 9.
  • Oval marble, 244x137 cm: 8 to 10 seats.

For example, the round Carrara marble Tulip table category offers diameters from 90 to 160 cm.

How to decide: three typical situations

Small living room, guests a few times a month

A round extendable of 100 or 120 cm takes up little space every day and seats 6 or more when open. Here the extendable wins.

Family of four, dinners for six

You can choose a 165x85 cm oval extendable, or a fixed marble table that already seats six, such as a 137 cm round or a 180x90 cm oval. The room decides: if you have the space, fixed marble saves you opening and closing the table.

Large dining room and big gatherings

With room to spare, a 219x121 or 244x137 cm marble oval seats 8 to 10 people without any extension. Alternatively, the 179x111 cm oval extendable reaches 8 to 9 seats when open.

The space around the table

Whatever you choose, plan for the largest size: the open table for the extendable, the full top for fixed marble. Allow at least 80-90 cm all around so chairs can be pulled out and people can move comfortably.

In short

An extendable marble Tulip table does not exist in our collection: the extendable is laminate, and marble is always fixed. If you need flexibility, go for the extendable; if you want natural stone, choose a marble table sized for the occasions when there are most of you. Either way, the pedestal base gives you the legroom that makes the Tulip so comfortable.
