120 cm round tulip table: seating, space and finishes

A 120 cm round tulip table is often the diameter that best balances space and sociability: big enough for a family of four who like to have guests, compact enough for an average living room. It is also one of the most searched-for sizes, and for good reason. This guide explains who it suits, how much room it needs, which finishes Tavoli.Design offers in this size and when a neighbouring diameter makes more sense.

120 cm round tulip table: how many people does it seat?

A 120 cm top seats 4 to 5 people comfortably, and up to 6 for a relaxed dinner. It is the first diameter in the range that really turns an everyday family table into a table for entertaining. One size down, the 107 cm seats 4 comfortably (5 at most); one size up, the 127 cm offers 5 to 6 comfortable places.

The number of chairs is not the only thing that matters. On a round table every place setting points towards the centre, and 120 cm is exactly the point where the middle of the top becomes useful again: there is room for a jug, a serving dish or a centrepiece without plates touching. If you often serve food family-style, you will notice the difference at every meal.

Which chairs work around a 120 cm table?

Seating capacity also depends on the chairs. Light armless chairs, such as Tulip chairs or DSW chairs, let you reach 6 people; wide chairs or armchairs bring it down to 4. This is where the tulip table's central pedestal really helps: there are no legs in the way of anyone's knees, so chairs can be pulled up anywhere around the edge.

How much space does a 120 cm round table need?

Allow at least 80 to 90 cm of clear space around the table so people can push back their chair and stand up. A handy rule is to add about 180 cm to the diameter: for a 120 cm tulip table, the ideal area is roughly 300 x 300 cm. If people also need to walk behind the chairs, for example between kitchen and living room, a few extra centimetres are worth having.

A round table has one advantage over a rectangular one: with no corners it looks lighter. In a square room or an open-plan dining corner it takes up less visual space than its measurements suggest, which is why the 120 cm works so well in open layouts.

Finishes available in the 120 cm diameter

At Tavoli.Design the 120 cm round tulip table comes in every finish in the range:

  • Carrara marble, the classic white with fine grey veining (120 cm round Carrara marble tulip table);
  • Arabescato and Arabescato Vagli, whites with bolder veining;
  • Calacatta Oro, with warm, golden veins;
  • Marquinia, deep black with white veining;
  • Emperador Dark, a rich dark brown;
  • Verde Alpi, an intense green;
  • laminate, the practical, hard-wearing option for everyday use (120 cm round laminate tulip table).

Choosing between marble and laminate mostly comes down to how you will use the table: marble has unique veining but needs a little care with stains and acids, while laminate is more forgiving with children and frequent dinners. Our guide on marble or laminate for the tulip table covers this in detail.

The 120 cm also comes as an extendable table

If there are usually four of you but you sometimes have guests, the round extendable tulip table with a 120 cm diameter opens up to 170 x 120 cm. Please note: the extendable version is available with a laminate top only, not in marble. Closed, it keeps the footprint of a 120 cm round table; open, it becomes an oval that welcomes a few more people.

120 cm or a neighbouring size?

The 120 cm is an excellent compromise, but it is not always the right choice. A few quick pointers:

  • 107 cm: for a couple or a family of four in a smaller space, when guests are rare;
  • 120 cm: for four people every day and up to six on special occasions, with room in the middle for serving;
  • 127 to 137 cm: if you often host six or want a truly sociable table and the room allows it.

Mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is choosing the diameter only for the largest number of guests: a table sized for six at Christmas can feel bulky for the rest of the year. The second is forgetting circulation space: a 120 cm table in a 250 cm room means squeezing sideways past the chairs. The third is overlooking lighting: a pendant centred over a 120 cm round top shows off both the surface and the tulip-shaped base.

In short

The 120 cm round tulip table is the right size if you want a table for four that can stretch to six, with space in the centre for serving and a manageable footprint of about 300 x 300 cm. It is available in Carrara, Arabescato, Arabescato Vagli, Calacatta Oro, Marquinia, Emperador Dark and Verde Alpi marble and in laminate, as well as in an extendable laminate version.
